Coming Out From Behind The Tree

He was smiling. She hated how he smiled. He was just standing there holding his arms out with a big grin stuck to his face. She was going to kill him and he was laughing.

“Come on. Give it to me,” he snapped. “I’d rather die that be trapped in here with you.”

“We wouldn’t be trapped in here if you hadn’t insisted on fighting with me. We could have gotten out. In fact, if you had just left me alone, we would have never gotten caught!” Buffy snapped. “What is your problem? Do you get off on me or something?”

* * *

“Maybe, she was so mad at me, she went off to be with herself!” Riley cried.

“Right,” Willow mumbled.

“What if she was kidnapped by muggers?”

“Right.”

“What if they’re hurting her right now?”

“Right. Hey Anya!”

“Yes?” Anya frowned turning to face Willow.

“Come here, I need you to read this for me, while, I go, um, do, stuff,” Willow said and pointed to her chair. “This chair.”

“What do you have to do?” Anya frowned as Willow tore up from her chair.

“Stuff,” Willow blurted. “Please.”

“Okay,” Anya sighed and sat down as Willow darted into the back of Giles’s apartment. “Wait! What am I supposed to read?”

“What if she was kidnapped by a gang of vampires?” Riley blurted.

“Oh Buffy could fight them off. In fact the only vampire she’s never been ready to kill is Spike,” Anya laughed.

“True. She’s always had a soft spot for the guy,” Xander agreed.

“Oh yes,” Anya nodded. “I mean, if I had ended up engaged to him, I would have staked him, but Buffy, nope, she let him live.”

“WHAT!” Riley exploded.

“Anya,” Xander snapped.

“Oh!” Anya cried. “Willow! “What was I supposed to read again?”

“Buffy…Spike…were…engaged?” Riley frowned.

“It was awful,” Giles mumbled.

“Giles!” Xander hissed.

“When?” Riley demanded. “She told me she was marrying a guy named Spike, when I saw her with the wedding dress… Oh…”

* * *

“Get off on what?” Spike spat. “You’re the one who’s always hanging around me! Begging for favors. Who did you keep locked in Giles house?”

“Who did you let keep you there! You had a million chances to run away, and did you? No. You stayed. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that you wanted to be around me.”

“Around what I can’t get rid of,” Spike snapped. “You’re always around Buffy. I never get a moments peace from you. I’m drowning in you.”

“You’re drowning me,” Buffy snapped.

“Oh please,” Spike snapped. He grabbed both her arms. “You probably just keep me around because I’m a reminder of what you can’t have. Angel.”

“I knew it,” a voice hissed behind the two.

“Who are you?” Buffy demanded. “Why the hell are did you bring us here? What? Is there some ritual that involves killing me?”

The vampire yanked Buffy out of Spike’s grasp. “I’ll teach you,” he snapped at Buffy. He placed his arm around her neck, blocking her air. She squirmed, trying to have him release her, but she looked defeated and broken some how. After a few seconds her body went limp. And the vampire dragged her out of the room and slammed the metal door behind him.

“Buffy!” Spike cried and pounded on the door. He felt a sinking feeling inside him. Buffy could die. And if she did, it would be all his fault.

* * *

“What if Buffy is with Spike right now?” Riley demanded.

“I’m sure Spike is sitting in his crypt right now, wallowing in self pity,” Xander shrugged.

“Shouldn’t we be figuring out where Buffy is? And why they took her?” Anya frowned.

“I mentioned this the other day, but no,” Willow sighed.

“Xander? How would you know what Spike is doing?” Riley snapped.

“Hey!” Anya cried.

* * *

“Bloody hell!” Spike roared and kicked at the metal door that was separating him from Buffy. “Bloody hell!” he cried out in pain as he kicked the door. “Smart Spike,” he sighed. He crawled back against the door and glanced at where he was stuck. It wasn’t to big, it looked underground, and he wasn’t sure how long he’d actually been there. In fact at the moment, he was sure of nothing.

Except the fact that Buffy was out there, and who knew what had happened to her.

* * *

Buffy’s eyes opened gently and she glanced around her. She frowned. Where had Spike gone? Her memories were fuzzy, and she seemed to be out of breath.

Oh-no. I didn’t kill him, did I?

Buffy frowned as she had ropes tied behind her back. “Great,” she mumbled and started to tug at them.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you?”

“Spike?” she whispered.

“No, the others, they call me Fury,” the vampire snapped.

“Cause you get annoyed a lot?” Buffy frowned and continued to tug.

“Not important.”

“Fine, then how about telling me why I’m tied to whatever the hell I’m tied to, and you’ve kidnapped me,” Buffy demanded, looking him square in the eye. She wanted to ask about Spike, but was terrified she’d ended up staking him. How dare he bring up Angel? How could-

“Let’s just say, you’ll love it, to death,” he laughed.

* * *

Spike gave the door one final kick before he slipped down against the wall. He had to face reality. He wasn’t half as strong as the slayer, and his chip had clearly kept him out of the game for a long time.

Why was he even kicking the door? Buffy was the slayer, he was a vampire, they didn’t tend to enjoy each other’s company.

But if she had died, because of him, he’d feel awful.

And he hated this new feeling that he cared for someone. He hated it more than anything. Strangely enough though, he loved to hate it.

“To death? You think that would scare me?”

That voice. That sweet yet annoying voice. He’d know that voice anywhere. It was Buffy’s.

“Buffy!” he yelled.

* * *

“Spike,” she mumbled. She had a sudden urge to stake this vampire, and then go kill Spike. She began to tug on the ropes even harder.

“I don’t think you two are going to stay back there. I think I’ll keep you out here until the ritual.”

“The hell you will!” a voice behind him snapped.

“Uh-oh, someone’s in trouble,” Buffy smirked. Uh-oh, hanging out with Spike is starting to wear off on me.

A tall, strong looking vampire appeared out of the black, “We can’t bring them out here because this is where we prepare for the ritual.”

“So? We’re going to kill her anyway!”

“Sure talk about me like I’m not even here,” Buffy mumbled.

“Untie her and stick her back in the room.”

“But I caught them, in the middle of, I don’t know, but it was getting hot in there.”

“WHAT!” a voice exploded behind the door.

“We should at least tie them up back there.”

The other vampire sighed and pushed Fury back against the wall. “You will not screw this up.” He released him and began to untie Buffy’s ropes. He grabbed her by her hair and swung the door open. “You’ll die soon enough. You both will.”

“We’ll see about that,” Spike growled and Buffy was thrown into him and the door slammed shut.

* * *

“Why would I know anything about Spike!” Xander yelled. “I’m just saying, he’s probably remembering his Glory days with Dru. Buffy is the last person in the world he wants to be with.”

“So you’re saying Buffy wants to be with him!” Riley yelled. “How would you know anything about her?”

“Oh, I’m just her best friend,” Xander sighed rolling his eyes.

“Stop it! Both of you!” Willow hissed.

“I’m her boyfriend. It’s my job to know these things,” Riley snapped.

“No wonder she got in a fight with you. I can’t image what it’s like dating you. You always have to be in charge. No wonder she walked away.”

“That is not true!” Riley cried.

“Both of you that’s enough!” Giles roared. “Buffy is missing. She could be in real danger right now. And there is no telling what could happen to her. She could die and you two are sitting her arguing over something childish. I’m ashamed. Who knows what Buffy is going through right now.”

* * *

“February made me shiver, after all the papers I delivered.”

“Shut up,” Buffy warned.

“So tired at the doorstep. I couldn’t take, one more step. I can’t remember if I cried when I read about her widowed bride.”

“Shut up.”

“But something touched me deep inside. The day…”

“Do I have to stake you? I haven’t got a stake. How about if I cut your head off?”

“The music…died.”

Buffy stopped. Silence. She smirked. “Thank you,” she mumbled.

“So…” Spike started again. Buffy pounced on him, and shoved her hand over his mouth. A muffled ‘hey’ was shouted at her.

“Keep singing, and I’ll kill you,” she warned, then gently removed her hand, still sitting on top of him.

“Oh. I’m scared. Besides, being dust is better than being trapped in a room with you,” he snapped staring right at her.

“I almost wish they’d have killed me out there,” Buffy snapped back holding her ground. “Anything is better than hearing you sing.”

“Really.” Spike smirked. “At least I’m not like that boring tree you shag day in day out.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Oh give it a break Buffy,” Spike sighed. “I’m nothing here. You’re probably thinking about tree man day in day out. And I’m nothing, but a shadow behind him.”

Buffy opened her mouth and then closed it.

“Ohh, I’ve left the slayer speechless. Face it slayer, they’ve got nothing on you. I can press your buttons better than they can.”

“You’re disgusting,” Buffy spat.

And the next thing either one of them knew, they were kissing.

Sweet Misery
